A Day at Summer Games Camp

The day starts with the ringing of the bell and then getting dressed and ready for the day. Campers stay in cabins with boys or girls of the same age along with a couple Huddle Leaders and an Adult Leader.

Next campers gather on the green. Our Games Director leads a warm up for day full of fun and games.

In order to get enough energy for the day, we head to Grace Hall for breakfast. Campers experience a family style meal with their huddle. Before each meal one of the huddles will lead the camp in grace.

We want to start the day off on the right foot, so the Huddle Leaders lead the huddle group in Morning Watch, a devotional time. Each camper gets a workbook full of discussion points surrounding the year’s theme and music. This is a great opportunity for campers to use their Bible and grow in their faith.

Now that we’ve spent some time learning about God, we head to the games field where we praise the Lord through good sportsmanship and cheering on our teammates as well as the other team. Summer Games has a great line up of fun and silly games including: noodle hockey, beach towel volleyball and frozen kickball. The huddles pray before and after each game asking God for safety and thanking Him for a fun game.

After games we head back to chapel for Praise, Worship and Teaching. A choir is invited to lead the group in the Praise and Worship songs that we learn during the week. The music follows the theme for the week and the motions help us learn the words. After the music, one of the spiritual deans shares a short message about what God wants us to learn from one of the songs. The teachings often include visits from Pastor Tom’s puppet friends or great stories from Pastor Elbert.

Back up to Grace Hall for lunch. Campers learn how to set up tables as well as how to be a server as they get a chance to be the “hopper” for their huddle. Hoppers bring food to the table, get seconds, and clean up the table after the meal is over.

After a busy morning, campers are ready for a bit of R&R – otherwise known as Horizontal Hour (H-hour). During H-hour campers return to their cabins for quiet time to rest, read, write letters home, or take a nap.

Campers emerge from their H-hour dressed for the beach. But first a stop by the canteen for snacks and a game of nuke ‘em.

Beach time starts with another crazy Summer Games Camp activity: leaky barrel, dead fish, inner tube relays, or greasy watermelon. After each huddle participates in the game, campers are free to swim, canoe or kayak, toss the Frisbee, or hang out on the beach.

After fun in the sun, the campers head back to their cabins to get showers and tidy up their cabins to pass the inspection of Nurse Karen and Games Director Stephanie. They look for suitcases picked up, beds made, wet towels on the line, and garbage taken out. Cabins work together to create a neat living space. One day during the week, the cabin will work on constructing a craft that goes along with the week’s theme.

Supper finds us back at Grace Hall. While two of the huddles set up the tables, the rest of the camp gathers on the porch for silly songs.

After dinner, each day has a unique activity planned. On Monday the Huddle Leaders put on a variety show complete with musical ensembles, funny skits, and plenty of laughter. Tuesday evening involves a campfire where each cabin leads the camp in a silly song they have prepared. Wednesday evening hosts a dance complete with an all-Christian artist play list. Thursday starts with a presentation about a mission trip from one of the Summer Games Staff so that campers are exposed to the ideas of mission work they can do. The evening finishes up with “A View from Beneath the Cross,” a re-enactment of the crucifixion in which the huddle leaders provide a unique view of Christ’s sacrificial love. A Resurrection Service follows up the pageant Friday morning where we contemplate Christ’s sacrifice as experienced through communion. Friday evening wraps up the week with Open Mike, an opportunity for campers to share what the week has meant to them and what they plan to do about it once they get home.

After each evening’s activity, we participate in Praise and Worship and hear another teaching from our Spiritual Deans. The evening worship ends in a time of prayer where Pastors and Adult Leaders are at the altar available to pray with anyone who would like to come.

After ending the day together with prayer, campers are dismissed by cabins to get ready for bed. Before shutting out the lights, the Huddle Leaders and Adult Leader guides the cabin through the devotional question from the teaching.

After a great day of games, fun, and smiles, everyone is ready to get some shuteye in anticipation of another great day.
